United midfielder hails match-winner

Michael Carrick hailed midfield partner Paul Scholes after the Manchester United stalwart fired the club into the UEFA Champions League final. Scholes, who missed the 1999 success over Bayern Munich through suspension, scored a stunning goal to see off Barcelona in Tuesday's semi-final at Old Trafford. The former England international shunned the spotlight after the match, and it was left to Carrick to praise the 33-year-old's contribution to United. "Scholesy didn't say much afterwards and just slipped away very quickly. That's just the way he is," said Carrick.

Remembered

"He is a superb player, perhaps not as appreciated as he should have been over the years. "I have seen him score goals like that so many times, whether it's in training or games, and the speed and timing with which he hits the ball are amazing. "He is a legend, isn't he? And he is going to be remembered for a long time." Scholes is expected to be the first name on Sir Alex Ferguson's team sheet for the final against Chelsea on 21st May and Carrick would be delighted to line up alongside him in midfield.
Footballer's footballer
He added: "Just to play alongside him and learn from him has been an absolute pleasure. "He is a footballer's footballer. He has been at this level for so long. "As long as he is part of us we always feel we have a chance. "We appreciate the way he goes about his business. I have never met a character like Scholesy, certainly not someone who is that good. "You see how he plays in different situations, how he uses his experience - and you have so much confidence to be alongside someone like that."
