Hosts forced to cope without keeper
Austria goalkeeper Helge Payer will miss the Euro 2008 finals after suffering a thrombosis in the stomach area.
The Rapid Vienna No.1 complained of stomach and back pains during training on Monday and examinations by doctors in Graz and Vienna have shown a partial closure of individual veins in both areas which need immediate treatment.
"It is clear that Helge Payer needs to undergo immediate treatment and that no sporting exertions are possible in the near future," Austria national team doctor Ernst Schopp told
ORF.
Payer, who was expected to be the Euro co-hosts No.3 goalkeeper at the tournament, has been replaced in the squad by Hoffenheim custodian Ramazan Ozcan.
