Bafetimbi Gomis has been named in the France squad for Euro 2008 at the expense of Djibril Cisse.

Landreau, Escude, Mexes, Diarra, Flamini, Cisse and Ben Arfa miss out

Bafetimbi Gomis has been named in Raymond Domenech's 23-man France squad for Euro 2008 at the expense of Djibril Cisse. St Etienne forward Gomis, 22, became the first player to hit a brace on his debut since Zinedine Zidane after an excellent double in Tuesday's 2-0 win over Ecuador. Gomis' inclusion means Cisse will sit out his second successive major tournament after he missed the 2006 World Cup with a broken leg. Mathieu Flamini, Mickael Landreau, Julien Escude, Philippe Mexes, Alou Diarra, and Hatem Ben Arfa have all been dropped. France have been drawn in the 'group of death' - Group C - alongside Holland, Romania and world champions Italy.

Toughest moment

Domenech said at a news conference: "I don't want to make comments about a player or another but I want to say my feelings. "This was the toughest moment of my career as France coach. We went to each player's room and had to knock on the door with the verdict. "When the seven left the hotel, all the other players were in the lobby to express their support. It was a difficult moment and a strong one as well." France Squad: Gregory Coupet (Lyon), Sebastien Frey (Fiorentina), Steve Mandanda (Marseille); Eric Abidal (Barcelona), Jean-Alain Boumsong (Lyon), Francois Clerc (Lyon), Sebastien Squillaci (Lyon), William Gallas (Arsenal), Patrice Evra (Manchester United), Willy Sagnol (Bayern Munich), Lilian Thuram (Barcelona); Lassana Diarra (Portsmouth), Claude Makelele (Chelsea), Jeremy Toulalan (Lyon), Patrick Vieira (Internazionale); Nicolas Anelka (Chelsea), Karim Benzema (Lyon), Sidney Govou (Lyon), Samir Nasri (Marseille), Bafetimbi Gomis (St Etienne), Thierry Henry (Barcelona), Florent Malouda (Chelsea), Franck Ribery (Bayern Munich).
