Midfielder's decision leaves Doncaster 'disappointed'

Paul Green is poised to join Derby County after turning down a new contract at Doncaster Rovers. The midfielder was offered a deal to stay at the Keepmoat Stadium following Rovers' promotion to the Championship. Earlier this week, the 25-year-old hinted that he would be sticking with Doncaster after making over 270 appearances for the club. But Rovers have issued a statement to confirm that Green has rejected a new deal and will join relegated Derby on a free transfer.

Money the key

"Derby made Green an offer he felt he could not refuse and Rovers felt they could not match Derby's offer," read the statement on the club's official website. "Doncaster are very disappointed that a player that the club has developed from the youth team to a Wembley appearance over the last 10 years has made this choice, but obviously the money was the overriding factor." Rams boss Paul Jewell is busy overhauling his squad at Pride Park as he looks to lead the club to an immediate return to the Premier League. Green will be the latest piece in the jigsaw, with Jewell having also lined up deals for Paul Connolly, Kris Commons and Nathan Ellington.
