But Bayern hope to complete signing of Butt
Bayern Munich hope to sign goalkeeper Hans-Jorg Butt, but are resigned to missing out on Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso.
The German champions are looking for a new keeper to provide the back-up to Michael Rensing following Oliver Kahn's retirement.
Rensing will take over the No.1 jersey from Kahn and Bayern are aiming to bring Butt back to the Bundesliga as the club's second choice.
Butt currently plays for Benfica, but Bayern general manager Uli Hoeness confirmed talks are underway to sign the former Bayer Leverkusen shot-stopper.
Fought to the end
"We're talking to him," Hoeness told the club's
official website.
"I could well imagine it'll all be sorted out in the next few days."
However, Hoeness has conceded defeat in the club's attempts to prise tough-tackling midfielder Gattuso away from Milan.
He added: "We fought for him right until the end, but it didn't work out because Milan just put more and more money on the table."
