Contract talks with midfielder ongoing

Southend United boss Steve Tilson is not surprised Nicky Bailey is attracting interest after confirming contract talks with the midfielder are ongoing. Skysports.com revealed earlier on Monday that Bailey has turned down a new deal at Roots Hall, although he still has two years remaining on his current contract. A clutch of Championship clubs are keeping tabs on the 23-year-old and Tilson understands why other teams would want the former Barnet man. "We've been speaking with Nicky for some time now," Tilson told the club's official website.

Big player

"The chairman has been dealing with the situation, but these processes are often lengthy. "Those discussions are still ongoing, but Nicky still has two years left on his current contract and we see him as having a big part to play next season. "When a player does as well as Nicky has done he is bound to attract interest from other teams. "But when we signed him we knew he would be a big player for us, and nothing has changed."
