Arsenal boss rues lack of conviction in France side

Arsene Wenger believes France have made a poor start to Euro 2008 because they are lacking confidence. France were among the favourites ahead of the tournament, but a tepid 0-0 draw with Romania followed by a 4-1 defeat to Holland has left the side on the brink of elimination. France and Italy now trail Romania by one point in Group C and, while France could advance if they beat Italy and Romania fail to beat Holland in the final game, their hopes of success are now minimal. And, while the Arsenal boss believes France are creating enough chances, he feels that the defeat to Holland revealed a lack of conviction. "We always had the impression we could score, but you can say the same of a Dutch side which has scored seven in two games and is a serious pretender for the title," he said. "Lack of success is not on based on a lack of quality, but confidence and conviction seem to be lacking. "There is a little something missing - effectiveness, less of a killer touch. France produced some nice chances, but were a bit lacking in their finishing."
