Cobblers boss keen on Chesterfield striker

Northampton manager Stuart Gray is waiting to hear back from Chesterfield after enquiring about striker Jamie Ward. The 22-year-old caught the eye last term in his first full season at Saltergate, scoring 12 goals in 27 league starts as the Spireites fell short of the League Two play-offs. Gray has worked with the former Aston Villa trainee previously and sees the diminutive front man as the perfect strike partner for Adebayo Akinfenwa as the Cobblers eye League One promotion next season. Chesterfield chairman Barrie Hubbard said earlier this week that Ward was not for sale, so Gray has other targets in mind. "We've made an enquiry at this moment in time," he told the club's official website. "We're just waiting for a response.

Great qualities

"If it happens, it happens, but at this moment I can't really go into too much detail. He's one of several others that we're interested in. "Jamie's a lad I know and who I worked with at Aston Villa," Gray added. "He's got great qualities and the most important thing is I need to get a player who's going to complement Bayo (Akinfenwa) and bring the best out of other players. "When Jamie's played against us he's always taken my eye and I've always been pleased with what I've seen."
