Spain coach expects quarter-final test

Spain coach Luis Aragones already has his sights set on Sunday's Euro 2008 quarter-final showdown against Italy. Aragones made 10 changes and his second string concluded their Group D campaign with a late 2-1 victory over outgoing champions Greece. Angelos Charisteas headed Greece into a first-half lead before Spain hit back after the break through Ruben de la Red and Daniel Guiza's 88th-minute header. Aragones knows his side will have to be at their best against the World Cup holders if Spain are to progress in the tournament.

Complicated

He said: "Now we are going to focus on the quarter-final with Italy. It will be complicated and we will have to be at 110 per cent." Spain have sparkled in the group stages, but they were similarly impressive at the 2006 World Cup, only to crash out against France in the second phase. Aragones is confident they will not make the same mistakes of two years ago, adding: "I think the team is ready for this kind of match. It learned a lot at the World Cup." After resting a host of star names, Aragones claimed he was happy with how his squad responded against Greece. He said: "I've got 23 very good players in my squad and in the second half we played some very intelligent, very good football."
Truth
Xabi Alonso, named captain for the night, went close twice with two stunning long-range efforts, and is now looking ahead to the Italian showdown. He said: "It was a tricky first half but we managed to battle through and win the game. "Now is the time to start thinking about Italy which is going to be the hour of truth."
