Skysports.com understands Wigan face a battle with Marseille to sign Birmingham's Olivier Kapo.
Wigan boss Steve Bruce is keen on bringing Kapo to the JJB Stadium having signed the French international last summmer from Juventus while he was in charge at St Andrews.
Kapo impressed at Birmingham last season despite their relegation, chipping in with five goals and a number of eye-catching performances.
Birmingham face a fight to keep hold of Kapo following their drop into the Championship and Wigan are ready to offer the attacking midfielder a quick return to the Premier League.
However, Marseille are hoping to lure the former Auxerre ace back to France with the prospect of UEFA Champions League football next season.
Kapo's agent, Willie McKay has confirmed Wigan and Marseille have expressed an interest in signing the 27-year-old with the Latics prepared to offer a player exchange deal to try and win the race for Kapo's signature.
Interest
"Wigan have expressed an interest in signing Olivier and now Marseille have made their interest known.
"Steve Bruce is a big admirer of Olivier having worked with him before and would like to bring him to Wigan, while Marseille hope they can bring him back to France.
"Olivier's preferred choice is to stay in England as he enjoys playing here and he hopes something can be sorted out.
"I believe Wigan are prepared to offer some players in exchange to try and persuade Birmingham to do a deal."
