Striker pens new deal

Lee Thorpe has signed a new six-month contract extension with League Two side Rochdale. The 32-year-old looked set to depart at the end of last season but will now return to Spotland for pre-season training on 5th July. The striker arrived at Rochdale from Brentford in January and scored one goal in eight appearances for the club as they reached the play-offs. However, he was unable to play any part in Dale's semi-final encounter with Darlington as he broke his arm in a freak accident on the way to the game.

Toner signs

Meanwhile, Ciaran Toner admits that he cannot wait to begin his career at the club after penning a one-year deal. The former Tottenham trainee has secured his release from League Two rivals Grimsby and becomes Keith Hill's first signing of the summer. The Northern Ireland international is determined to help the club bounce back from their Wembley heartache at the hands of Stockport last season and sees no reason why Dale cannot go one better this time around. "The team did very well last season and it is unfortunate that they didn't progress up to League One level," he said. "It is always a lottery when you get to the final and it will have been disappointing to lose at Wembley but the players can take real heart from the way that they performed last year and look forward to pushing on this time around. "Hopefully I can help us to get up there be it by the play-offs again or by automatic promotion."
