Midfielder loses his battle against cancer

Oldham and Rochdale have expressed their sorrow at the news that former player Ernie Cooksey has died. The 28-year-old, who was admitted to hospital earlier in the week, lost his battle against cancer on Thursday. The midfielder spent last season with Blue Square Premier side Grays, and also represented Boston and Crawley Town. He made a name for himself during a season with Oldham in 2003/04, before going on to enjoy a three-year spell at Dale. In the wake of the sad news both clubs have released a statement. A statement issued by Oldham Athletic said: "The club would like to pass on their sincere condolences and best wishes to Ernie's family at this sad time." Rochdale's statement read: "Everyone at Rochdale is terribly saddened by this news and our thoughts, prayers and best wishes go to his family at this tragic time."
