Striker seeks Cheltenham exit

Steven Gillespie has handed in a transfer request at League One side Cheltenham. The striker, who scored 16 goals for the Robins last term, had seen a £400,000 approach from an unnamed League One rival knocked back in June. Scunthorpe had also been keen on taking him to Glanford Park but were put off by Cheltenham's price tag. However, despite having two years left on his contract at Whaddon Road, Gillespie has now taken matters into his own hands and asked for permission to leave the club. "Steven came to me and handed in his transfer request," manager Keith Downing told the club's official website. "He has not made the request because he is unhappy here. It is purely because he is aware of the interest from other clubs and feels that he would like to look at opportunities elsewhere. "I very much want to keep Steven and he has known that all along. "It is now up to the board to decide whether to accept the offer or not. Either way, Steven remains very much part of our plans and is continuing to work hard with us in pre-season training."
