Striker prepared to discuss terms, but demands remain too high

Peterborough's wantaway striker Aaron McLean is prepared to discuss a new deal with the League One club. The 25-year-old put in a transfer request last week after falling out with the London Road side in regards to the £3million price-tag they placed on his head. He is a summer transfer target for Wolves, although the Championship outfit are yet to meet Posh's valuation of the player. Mick McCarthy's men appear reluctant to up the £1.5million offer they had knocked back several weeks ago, with the situation reaching a stalemate as a result. McLean has since travelled with Peterborough to their pre-season training camp in Marbella and would now appear to be questioning his desire to leave. Club chairman Darragh MacAnthony has revealed that the striker admitted to him that he would be willing to discuss a new contract, although his wage demands are still proving to be substantially higher than the Posh are willing to pay.

Support

"I've always promised Aaron I wouldn't stand in his way if a Premier League club came in for him," MacAnthony told the Express and Star. "Aaron phoned me last week, thanked me for my support, asked if he could take me up on my previous offer of a new contract and said he'd now like to stay at the club. "I then spoke to his agent for a good hour on the phone, but I nearly fell over when he set out the terms Aaron wanted. "Anyhow I offered Aaron the best contract this club has seen and his agent laughed at it. Aaron asked for a transfer the following day. "I'm afraid his head is all over the place and this happens in football. "If Wolves believe in him as much as I always have, they know the price it will take to buy him. "If they don't then he stays and plays for his place in our team as per his current contract."
