Skysports.com looks at the teams chasing the League Two title, and those who will be battling relegation.
McCall's Bantams stand out in promotion race
Stuart McCall can lead Bradford out of League Two at the second time of asking - but the pressure will be firmly on the team who were only relegated from the Premier League seven years ago.
Former Everton midfielder McCall knows his way around the bottom division following last season's mid-table finish and has invested wisely, raiding League One for new signings Graeme Lee, Chris Brandon, Paul McLaren and Paul Arnison.
The Bantams last enjoyed a promotion party when they reached the top flight under Paul Jewell in 1999 but they will kick off the new season as one of the favourites for the title.
Among their likely rivals at the top are
Darlington, whose trimmed squad has a leaner, meaner look about it.
Jason Kennedy made his loan spell from Middlesbrough a permanent switch while David Poole, Adam Griffin and Adam Proudlock will be useful additions with boss Dave Penney opting for quality over quantity.
Peter Taylor's arrival at
Wycombe will once again raise expectations of a promotion push at Adams Park and the former Leicester, Crystal Palace and England Under-21 boss has the nous to mount a genuine bid this term.
Scott McGleish cracked an impressive 26 goals for the Chairboys last time out and a similar return will see them there or thereabouts.
Summer spree
Chesterfield's new-look side, including former Derby and Ipswich winger Darren Currie, looks capable of achieving at least a play-off berth while
Shrewsbury have not splashed £170,000 on Nottingham Forest's Grant Holt to merely be among the also-rans.
Rochdale suffered play-off final heartbreak last term and will expect to be in contention once again, while
Lincoln's summer signing spree suggests manager Peter Jackson is aiming high.
Gillingham and
Port Vale, both relegated last season, will also be confident of challenging for instant returns to League One.
At the other end,
Luton have been virtually doomed to non-league football after being deducted 30 points for financial irregularities and administration.
The troubled Hatters will only reach plus figures by mid-October at the earliest, leaving boss Mick Harford with a near-impossible task to stave off a third successive relegation.
Rotherham could also be facing a points deduction due to their financial difficulties, while the Football League are still to ratify the Millers' decision to play at Sheffield's Don Valley Stadium next season.
Luton and Rotherham's woes mean the likes of
Dagenham, Accrington, Morecambe, Chester and Macclesfield should be breathing a sigh of relief come May.
Dagenham's achievement of surviving their first campaign in the Football League should not be underestimated and another season of struggle beckons for John Still's troops.
Consolidation
Colin Murdock and John Mullin are shrewd acquisitions for Accrington while Sammy McIlroy's Morecambe should also have enough about them to secure a second season in the division.
Chester's off-field troubles will herald another tough campaign and Keith Alexander's Macc will be nervously looking over their shoulders once more.
The future looks brighter for the newly-promoted sides with Aldershot making their debut 16 years after their previous incarnation went bust.
Gary Waddock has proved an excellent manager despite having his fingers burnt at QPR and the Shots are well equipped for a season of consolidation at the very least.
The same can be said for
Exeter, back after a five-year absence and bringing with them a welcome addition to the league's managerial ranks in the cravat-wearing Paul Tisdale.
Barnet, Bury and Brentford were bunched in mid-table last term, a finishing position the former may struggle to match, while the latter duo will be eager to improve.
Notts County have spent two of the last three seasons flirting a little too dangerously with relegation and will expect better, while
Bournemouth's off-field distractions are expected to hamper any promotion dreams.
Grimsby's pre-season has left much to be desired, but they are unlikely to face any real relegation concerns, especially with the experienced Alan Buckley at the helm.

In: Jack Obersteller (Wycombe, free), Emmanuel Panther (York, free), Marcus Stewart (Yeovil, free)
Out: Wayne Carlisle (Torquay, free)
Key man: Marcus Stewart
