Pompey defender has United in his sights
Linvoy Primus is back in full training following a season-long nightmare in which he feared his career may be over.
The popular Portsmouth defender saw a routine knee operation rule him out for the entire 2007/08 campaign, forcing him to miss Pompey's FA Cup triumph.
However, he has now returned to the first-team fold and is targeting a place in Harry Redknapp's side for Sunday's Community Shield contest against Premier League champions Manchester United.
"I thought I would be back playing inside a few months," Primus said in the
Daily Star.
"I actually had a couple of reserve games but knew things were not right."
Doubts
The 34-year-old eventually visited world-renowned knee specialist Dr Steadman at his Colorado clinic, who performed a second, career-saving operation.
"I spent a week in the United States after the op but then came home," Primus added.
"I was laid up in bed seven hours a day and on a machine that kept the knee mobile for a further seven hours.
"I could put no weight at all on the knee for six weeks and that was when my mind began to wander and I doubted whether I'd ever play again.
"It was going to go one way or the other.
"Thankfully that mood lasted only a couple of days before I made up my mind that I was going to give it my best shot."
Exciting
Primus is desperate to make a swift return to action and believes that the club are on the cusp of achieving something special.
"There are exciting times ahead for this club - we're on the verge of something really good," he said.
"My aim is just to be in the squad for Sunday.
"After what's happened in the last 15 months that would be an achievement in itself."
