Inter Milan striker Adriano has strained his right calf muscle and could miss the start of the season.
Brazilian striker looks set to miss start of the season
Inter Milan could begin the defence of their Serie A crown without Adriano following the news that the striker has strained his right calf muscle.
The Brazilian, who struggled with a number of fitness problems last season, suffered his latest setback in a recent training session and is unavailable for Friday's friendly with Benfica.
Inter also fear Adriano will miss the 24th August Italian Supercup meeting with Roma and their opening Serie A fixture against Sampdoria the following week.
A statement on Inter's
official website on Wednesday said: "He (Adriano) underwent medical tests today and has already begun a course of physiotherapy ahead of another check-up next week."
Adriano is seeking to find a place in new coach Jose Mourinho's plans after a successful loan stint at Brazilian club Sao Paulo, who he joined last December.
Mourinho already has several fitness concerns ahead of the new season as France midfielder Patrick Vieira and defenders Marco Materazzi, Cristian Chivu, Ivan Cordoba and Walter Samuel are recovering from injuries.
