Midfielder set to make debut on Saturday against Hearts

Rangers have confirmed the £3million signing of Pedro Mendes from Portsmouth on a three-year contract. Mendes has completed his move to Ibrox in time to be available for Saturday's SPL match at home to Hearts. The Portuguese midfielder had been wanted by Gers boss Walter Smith earlier in the summer, but his Pompey counterpart Harry Redknapp appeared reluctant to lose Mendes. However, with the deal now completed, Smith is confident the 29-year-old will prove to be a welcome addition to his squad, particularly in the absence of skipper Barry Ferguson.

Technically strong

"He is a really good all-round midfield player and he will help us a lot," said Smith. "He's very good technically and I hope he will come and improve us. "He can get a goal or two as well, so if all goes well, he will be a good acquisition for us." Mendes added: "It's such a great club and there is the chance to fight for the championship and win cups here. "When you join a club like Rangers, you can't expect anything but to win things."
SPL title
Mendes added: "It's time to change. The championship is always difficult but everyone at this club wants to be champions again and bring happiness to the fans again "I will try to help them win something. "The club itself is such a great club. It's a chance to fight for the championship and win cups. "All of this together made me accept this offer. "When you join a club like Rangers, you can't expect anything else other than to win. "I want to win all the competitions we are involved in." He joined Portsmouth in January 2006 from Tottenham Hotspur and scored five goals in 68 appearances during his time at Fratton Park.
