Latics defender back in the international fold

Wigan Athletic defender Paul Scharner has won his first call-up for Austria in two years. Scharner was originally omitted from Karel Bruckner's squad, but has now been included due to Rene Aufhauser's injury. The 28-year-old has played 15 times for his county, although his last appearance came back in August 2006. He controversially quit the international fold in 2006 after criticising coach Josef Hickersberger. Scharner had hoped to win a recall ahead of Euro 2008 after patching up his differences, although he still missed out. However, he could now feature against Italy on Wednesday after being brought back from the international wilderness.
