Portugal thrash Faroes; Croatia and Greece also win

Portugal crushed Faroe Islands 5-0, while there were also wins for Croatia, Greece and Switzerland. Carlos Martins fired Portugal ahead against Faroe Islands on 23 minutes but there were no further breakthroughs before half-time. Carlos Queiroz's side then ran riot in the second half with Simao Sabrosa (48) striking early on. Duda added a third in the 86th minute, Bruno Alves made it 4-0 with a minute to go and Manchester United's Nani piled on the misery in stoppage time. Croatia survived a scare as they came from behind to win 3-2 in Slovenia. Slaven Bilic's side, who will face England in a World Cup qualifier next month, fell behind to Marko Suler's goal after just four minutes. Ivan Rakitic equalised in the 37th minute but Mirnes Sisis restored Slovenia's lead on 59 minutes. Darijo Srna equalised from the penalty spot just a minute later and Rakitic then struck after 64 minutes to secure victory. Switzerland turned in an impressive display to hammer Cyprus 4-1. Valentin Stocker netted the opener on eight minutes before Hakan Yakin made it 2-0 in the 27th minute. Konstantinos Makrides pulled one back for Cyprus in the 36th minute but Alain Nef restored Switzerland's two-goal cushion after 72 minutes. Johan Vonlanthen then completed the rout with a fourth on 80 minutes.

Greece

returned to winning ways after a disastrous Euro 2008 as they beat Slovakia 2-0. Bayer Leverkusen striker Theofanis Gekas was the hero as he broke the deadlock on 60 minutes and then grabbed a second with ten minutes to go. Romania warmed up their upcoming World Cup qualifiers with a 1-0 victory over Latvia. Romania, who held France and Italy at Euro 2008 but lost to Holland, secured the confidence-boosting win courtesy of Nicolae Dica's strike on 51 minutes. Turkey kept up their fine form with a 1-0 success against Chile. Turkey enjoyed a fairytale run through to the semi-finals of Euro 2008 but they face a tricky World Cup qualifying group that includes Spain. They were given a stern test by Chile but emerged triumphant thanks to Hamit Altintop's goal 15 minutes from time. Ukraine came out on top in the battle of the Euro 2012 co-hosts as they defeated Poland 1-0. Lukasz Fabianski of Arsenal was kept busy in the Polish goal as Ukraine dominated, but he could do nothing about Serhiy Kravchenko's header on the stroke of half-time. Poland, who bowed out of Euro 2008 in the group stage after failing to win a game, were unable to respond after the break. Fisal Bin Sultan salvaged a 1-1 draw for Saudi Arabia against Paraguay, who lead the South American qualification table. Bin Sultan struck in the 77th minute to cancel out Cristian Riveros's opener in the 10th minute. Goalkeeper Richard Kingson was an unlikely scorer for Ghana as they held Tanzania 1-1. Henry Joseph put Tanzania ahead in the first half before Kingson's last-gasp equaliser for an under-strength Ghana side. Amine Chermiti found the target for Tunisia against Angola but the game finished 1-1 after a last-minute equaliser from Norberto Maurito.
