Motherwell have been left shocked by the death of former player Jamie Dolan at the age of 39.
Tributes paid to retired midfielder
Motherwell have been left shocked and saddened by the death of former fans' favourite Jamie Dolan at the age of 39.
The retired midfielder's loss is the latest shock to hit the club following the death of captain Phil O'Donnell last December after he collapsed on the Fir Park pitch during a game against Dundee United.
Dolan was a fans' favourite after spending more than 10 years at Fir Park, making 193 appearances and scoring five goals.
After retiring from playing, he retained strong links with the club, taking an active role in the former players' club and assisting Motherwell with charity and sponsors' events.
Terrible shock
A statement on the club's
official website said: "His death, aged just 39, comes as a terrible shock and everyone at Motherwell Football Club would like to pass on our sincerest condolences to Jamie's family and friends at this sad time."
Dolan started his career at Motherwell in the 1980s after being signed from Forgewood Boys Club.
He appeared in the Youth Cup final against Celtic in the 1986/87 season and was then promoted to the senior squad under first-team boss Tommy McLean.
He became a mainstay in the heart of the Motherwell midfield in the early to mid-1990s, before he moved to Dundee United in January 1997 as part of a swap deal with Owen Coyle.
He then played for Dunfermline, Livingston, Forfar Athletic and finally Partick Thistle before retiring in 2002 after more than 300 league games.
In retirement, he remained active in the game and was involved in the Junior leagues for many years. At the time of his death, he was in charge of Scottish junior side Broxburn Athletic.
