David Sommeil has come out of a coma two weeks after suffering a cardiac arrest.

But former City defender 'not yet communicating'

Former Manchester City centre-back David Sommeil has come out of a coma two weeks after suffering a cardiac arrest at his club's training ground. The 34-year-old Valenciennes player regained consciousness on Wednesday and, after undergoing tests, club doctor Marc Chasselat was confident there were no signs of brain damage despite Sommeil's current inability to talk. "He's woken up in the medical sense of the term but he is not yet communicating," Chasselat explained to La Provence newspaper. "His eyes are open, he's looking around him but he's not talking. He smiles from time to time, which could be interpreted as the start of communication. "The cerebral activity is normal and there was no haematoma nor oedema in the brain." The newspaper also reported tests had shown no long-term damage or deformation of the former Sheffield United player's heart.
