QPR boss eyes improvement as Poortvliet praises troops

Queens Park Rangers boss Iain Dowie insists there is more to come from his side after they claimed an impressive 4-1 win over Southampton on Sunday. A brace from Dexter Blackstock and a goal apiece from Damion Stewart and Patrick Agyemang handed the home side success against 10-man Saints. Dowie was pleased with the performance but stressed that he is not getting carried away with the club's encouraging beginning to the new season. "We've got a long way to go and we're pleased with our start but there's lots we can improve on," said Dowie.

He added on Sky Sports News: "I was very satisfied with us as an attacking threat. We were a little bit under par with our defensive intensity." Southampton were reduced to 10 men on 30 minutes when Ollie Lancashire, who was making his first senior appearance, went in rashly on Damien Delaney. Of the sending off, Dowie said: "If that happened they'd be off every week. And the fact it's his debut as well - although it's a poor challenge and poorly timed. "But in some ways it affected us more than them - they got better and we got worse.
Poortvliet
"You have to say they play with a freedom and inhibition. They popped the ball about and (Adam) Lallana was a threat throughout." Meanwhile, Saints boss Jan Poortvliet praised his side, who got on the scoresheet via Lallana's strike, after they battled hard at Loftus Road. "It was frustrating and disappointing, but I'm proud of the boys," said the Dutchman. "With 10 men they did a great job and never gave up. But the second goal killed us."
