Real coach criticised by Spanish politician for Ronaldo pursuit

Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster has faced criticism from the president of Spanish region Cantabria, Miguel Angel Revilla. The outspoken politician held particular contempt for Real Madrid's failed pursuit of Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer. Revilla believes Real's reported €80million (£63million) budget for Ronaldo was a 'scandal' and should not have been allowed to go ahead. "It was a complete scandal, but we live in a crazy world," said Revilla.

Scandal

"That sort of money is an insult to the intelligence and should be denounced. It made me feel queasy. "Around 20 per cent of Spanish people live on the breadline and they are talking about that." Revilla's comments come as Real Madrid travel to Racing Santander on Sunday, the president confident that the home side can come out on top. "I truly believe that they will not win," said Revilla. "Against both Sevilla and Barca we were up against it throughout and still managed to take something, so I think we can earn something against Madrid."
Confident
Real defeated BATE Borisov of Belarus in the Champions League midweek but Revilla does not believe the victory will give them any advantage going into Sunday's La Liga game. "They were up against no opposition," added Revilla. "That team did not shoot or even try and play. "That game was one of the worst things I have watched on television in my life."
