Benitez set to ring changes for visit of Railwaymen

Liverpool welcome Crewe to Anfield on Tuesday night in the third round of the Carling Cup. Seven-time winners of the competition Liverpool are expected to ring the changes for the visit of their League One opponents, but manager Rafa Benitez remains keen to field a competitive side. Crewe head coach Steve Holland, though, will have his eyes on an upset on Merseyside as the Railwaymen seek a place in the fourth round for the first time in their history. Benitez announced on Monday that he was set to field a number of his fringe players for the fixture as he plans for Saturday's derby at Everton. Daniel Agger is expected to return in the heart of the Reds defence as the Danish centre-back bids to earn a new contract.

Cavalieri debut

Meanwhile, Brazilian goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri, who arrived from Palmeiras in the summer, is likely to make his debut, with first choice Jose Reina set to be rested. Left-back Emiliano Insua, midfielder Damien Plessis and forward Daniel Pacheco are also ready to make appearances as Benitez bids to build first-team experience. Crewe travel to their Premier League opponents after coming out on the wrong end of a seven-goal thriller with Southend at the weekend and Holland will be keen for a more resolute performance. Defenders Danny Woodards and Julien Baudet will be available after overcoming injury to face Southend. But Chris McCready remains a doubt as he continues to recover from a hamstring problem sustained in August. Crewe sit in 21st position in League One and have lost five out of seven games this season.
