Frenchman steps into Fossati's shoes
Bruno Metsu has been named as the new coach of the Qatar national side after walking out on the United Arab Emirates.
The Frenchman quit his post with the UAE last week following successive home defeats in the final round of Asian qualifying for the 2010 World Cup.
The 54-year-old, who led Senegal to the quarter-finals of the 2002 World Cup and won the 2007 Gulf Nations Cup with UAE, has penned a two-year contract with Qatar.
His new side currently top their qualifying group on the road to South Africa, but terminated the contract of former boss Jorge Fossati after the Uruguayan underwent stomach surgery.
Despite their success thus far, Qatar could yet to be kicked out of World Cup qualification if the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) overrules FIFA's decision not to punish them for fielding an ineligible player in an earlier round.
