Veteran midfielder fails to shake off knee problem

Paul Underwood has been forced to leave Luton Town after failing to shake off a knee injury. Having not featured for the Hatters since 2006 the veteran midfielder has decided to hang up his boots, but has refused to rule out a return to football in the future. The 35-year-old had been out of action since the prelude to the 2006/07 season, but a long struggle to try and overcome the problem has not brought the results he had hoped for. With no hope of regaining full fitness before the climax to the current season, and the end of his contract, Underwood has decided to walk away at this stage.

Demoralising

The former Rushden & Diamonds man will now continue his rehabilitation away from Kenilworth Road, with the news of his departure being felt by everyone connected with the club. "It's horrible when a player suffers such a long-term injury," club director Antony Brown told the Hatters' official website. "It is hugely demoralising for the player concerned when they are trying to regain fitness but are separate from the rest of the squad and can't contribute on the pitch. "I know all the lads wish Paul the very best and hope he makes a full recovery and gets a chance of football for a couple more seasons."
