Germany captain denies squad rift

Germany captain Michael Ballack has rubbished reports of a rift with his team-mates. Ballack missed last month's World Cup qualifiers due to a foot injury but is back to lead his country in Saturday's crucial clash with Russia. The Chelsea midfielder fell out with team manager Oliver Bierhoff at the end of Euro 2008 and speculation suggested that he was then ostracised by the rest of the Germany squad. However, Ballack recently ended his feud with Bierhoff and he insists there is no problem in the camp. "The relationship is and always was intact," he said. "I never felt there was a problem in the team, so I don't need to change anything. That would be against my philosophy." Regarding his dispute with Bierhoff, Ballack added: "I know there has been much written about it, I can't remember the exact details of the conversation and, besides, it is unpleasant if these things are brought up again and again." Germany hammered Liechtenstein 6-0 in their opening World Cup qualifier but were then held to a 3-3 draw by Finland and Ballack realises the importance of bouncing back against Euro 2008 semi-finalists Russia. "We all know our roles and our job is to make sure Germany reaches the World Cup in two years time," he urged. "I expect it from each player."
