The best and the worst of this weekend's World Cup action, including our Team of the week.
Team of the weekend
Player of the weekend
Wayne Rooney
The Manchester United ace appears to be back to his best in an England shirt and his brace against Kazakhstan ended a four-year wait for an international double.
Rooney has become instrumental to Fabio Capello's England and the 22-year-old has now netted four goals in as many games as the Three Lions close in on their best start to a World Cup qualifying campaign.
Bolivia striker Joaquin Botero also deserves a mention after converting two headers in the opening 16 minutes of the 3-0 victory over Peru to become his country's all-time record goalscorer.
Goal of the weekend
Yoann Gourcuff
The Frenchman spectacularly earned Les Bleus what could prove a vital point in Romania on Saturday.
Raymond Domenech, of whom there will be more later, found his side 2-0 down inside 17 minutes in Constanta against their fellow Euro 2008 flops.
But Frank Ribery pulled one goal back before Gourcuff, currently on loan at Bordeaux from AC Milan, opened his international account after turning his marker to unleash an unstoppable 30-yard bullet.
Meanwhile, Konstantinos Katsouranis' long-range effort for Greece against Moldova cannot be ignored, and Robinho's stunning personal first in Brazil's 4-0 stroll against Venezuela was also easy on the eye.
Match of the weekend
Ecuador 1 Chile 0
While red cards cannot be applauded, we do like a bit of drama here at
skysports.com.
And Ecuador's victory over Chile provided an ample serving of the above as the match ended with 19 players on the field.
Chile's Ismael Fuentes was the first to head for an early bath following a late challenge on Joffre Guerron and then Ecuador and Wigan winger Antonio Valencia was handed his marching orders in the second half.
A premature queue began to form for the bubble bath in the Chile dressing room as defender Gonzalo Jara was dismissed before the final whistle.
Amongst the ill temper, Ecuador striker Christian Benitez netted a 71st-minute winner to revive his side's hopes of qualification.
Controversy of the weekend
Wembley boo-boys
Perhaps as obvious as that bus which you almost stepped in front of while still half a sleep on your amble to work this morning, but supporters' criticism of England full-back Ashley Cole has created the main talking point of the weekend.
'Fans boo player shock' is perhaps not the most controversial - or best - headline, but it was the nature of the vocal abuse which has earned criticism.
Capello and his England squad have rallied around Cole after he was instantly, and roundly, lamented for his sloppy back-pass which allowed Kazakhstan a consolation goal in their 5-1 defeat at Wembley.
Arguably, the treatment of Cole was harsh. But it has been suggested that the Chelsea full-back has not adhered himself to fans, who have a right to voice an opinion, in the past.
Rest assured there will be no boo-induced sore throats following Wednesday's trip to Belarus as Cole has sustained a hamstring injury.
In other news, Kris Boyd's decision to quit international football has rocked Scotland, with many staggered that he was left on the Hampden Park substitutes' bench against Norway by under-fire boss George Burley.
Miss of the weekend
Chris Iwelumo
Providing the square root of 307.69 without the aid of a calculator (pause for whirring of brain cogs), now there is a difficult task. Selecting the worst miss of the recent batch of World Cup qualifiers is not so testing.
Iwelumo's Hampden howler looks set to go down in football folklore as Scotland were held to a goalless draw against Norway, a result which could comeback to haunt Burley's side at the end of qualification in September next year.
Without a trundle wheel to hand, the naked eye estimates that debutant Iwelumo was three yards out when he connected with Gary Naysmith's cross to somehow drag wide with visiting goalkeeper Jon Knudsen committed.
The look on Iwelumo's face as his effort drifted past the far post summed things up. Either that or he had in fact been asked to provide an answer to the above mathematical poser.
Craig Bellamy's rotten penalty for Wales must also be named and shamed as the West Ham forward ensured his country have now failed on three occasions from 12 yards in Group 4.
Last chance saloon of the weekend
Raymond Domenech
Les Bleus chief Domenech has been under pressure since surviving the French guillotine following his side's failure at Euro 2008.
But the spectre of Didier Deschamps, Gerard Houllier and peoples' favourite Arsene Wenger continues to haunt Domenech as France sit fourth in Group 7.
Following Saturday's draw with Romania, March's trip to Lithuania will be a must-win for Domenech, if he makes it that far.
Wheels come off of the weekend
Colombia 0 Paraguay 1
It is tempting to suggest that San Marino actually finding the back of the net in their 3-1 defeat to Slovakia was the greatest surprise.
But, after an impressive start to their qualifying campaign, Colombia are beginning to panic that they will fail to qualify for a third successive World Cup finals.
Since defeating Argentina in November last year, Eduardo Lara's side have failed to record a victory in five games and Saturday's loss to Paraguay has only increased the volume of alarm bells in Bogota.
Poland's 2-1 home win over the Czech Republic also raised a few eyebrows as Petr Rada's men remain without a win and sit six points off the top two in Group 3.
