Former City defender 'sad' to leave football

Former Manchester City centre-back David Sommeil has been forced to call an end to his footballing career following the heart attack he suffered in training. The 34-year-old Valenciennes defender suffered a cardiac arrest at his club's training ground in August and was in intensive care until 10th September. Sommeil joined Premier League side City from Bordeaux in 2003 before enjoying spells at Marseille and Sheffield United. The former Caen and Rennes player told skysports.com: "I am sad to leave football, but I am very happy to be around my children and enjoy their company. "I had a good career. It is a sad day today, but I thank god I am still alive." Valenciennes team doctor Marc Chasselat added: "David will never play football again except on the beach or with his children. "To play, he will have to find a doctor who gives authorisation but no-one will want to take the risk."
