Skysports.com's Team Teaser gives you the chance to help us fill in the missing blanks.
Welcome to skysports.com's Team Teaser. This is the game where you have the chance to help us fill in the missing blanks.
We provide you with a theme and you have to compile together a starting XI based on that theme. If you have a Team Teaser idea you would like running feel free to drop me an e-mail at james.pearson@bskyb.com with words 'team teaser' in the headline. Please e-mail only with ideas, not answers.
For example if the theme was East Enders then an ideal defender would be 'Terry Butcher' as in 'Pat Butcher' and so on until the line-up is complete!
Our new theme is Golden Oldies. Players that have carried on their playing careers into their 40s. Thanks go to Steven Chapman for coming up with the idea for this latest Team Teaser!
Where best to start than two footballing greats in Sir Stanley Matthews and Dino Zoff! Former England international Matthews actually played until he was 50 years old making him an obvious choice for our latest Team Teaser. James Culverhouse correctly pointed out he was one of the best candidates to make the team. Our second addition is Zoff, who captained Italy to World Cup glory in 1982 at the ripe old age of 40. Thanks go to Matthew Lambert for that one.
Two more names for the team! Thanks go to Sean Healy and Aksel Jansen for suggesting Paolo Maldini and Roger Milla respectively. Legend Maldini has spent his entire career with AC Milan and has won countless trophies with the Serie A giants. The 40-year-old has made over 600 league appearances for the Rossoneri. A record that is unlikely to be surpassed anytime soon. Milla, who impressed all at Italia 90', became the oldest player ever to score in a World Cup four years later in the USA.
AC Milan certainly know how to promote longevity and alongside Maldini in our backline comes Alessandro Costacurta. Thanks go to Marc Coleman and Culann Walsh for the suggestion. The former Rossoneri ace, who won seven Scudettos during this time with the club, announced his retirement in 2007 aged 41. The Italian is joined in the team by former Colombia international Carlos Valderrama. Valderrama, who won 111 caps for his county, ended his 22-year career in February 2004. Alec Frusher wanted the MLS star to make our starting XI.
We've literally had millions of people calling for Teddy Sheringham to be named up front, okay well a few shy of a million, so he's now in the team. Daniel Russell's name was first out of the hat. Sheringham, who had to spells with Spurs, beat his own record as the Premier League's oldest scorer when he netted for West Ham in a 2-1 defeat to Portsmouth in December 2006. Joining Sheringham in the team is England legend Ray Wilkins. The former Rangers and QPR man collected 84 caps for England and played past 40 with the likes of Millwall and Leyton Orient. Thanks go to Joe Millyard for that one.
The additions of Pietro Vierchowod, Peter Beagrie and Amadeo Carboni wrap up our latest team teaser! Thanks go to Christian Brix, Simon Leah and Andrew Flannigan for the submissions respectively. Vierchowod helped Juventus win the UEFA Champions League aged 37 and carried on playing for Piacenza aged 41 before retiring. He is joined by Carboni who on October 23rd 2005 became the oldest player at the age of 40 years, six months and 17 days to play in the La Liga. The addition of Beagrie completes our line up. The former Everton, Bradford and Scunthorpe winger played for Grimsby while in his 40s.
Thanks go to everyone who contributed! We'll put up a new Team Teaser shortly.
