Bentley appeal fails, defensive issues for Magpies

Gillingham will be without club captain Mark Bentley against Notts County, who have problems in defence. Bentley was sent off for a foul on Paul McLaren at Bradford on Saturday, but has failed in his appeal against a three-match ban. With Bentley missing, Stuart Lewis or Adam Miller are the most likely candidates to partner Curtis Weston in midfield, although Andrew Crofts is another option for manager Mark Stimson. Top scorer Simeon Jackson is a major concern after suffering an ankle injury in the process of scoring the equaliser in the 2-2 draw at Bradford . If Jackson is ruled out, then Stimson may elect to push on-loan Spurs man Andy Barcham up front and recall Albert Jarrett on the left, although Mark McCammon and youngster Luis Cumbers are also vying for a game. Captain Barry Fuller was booked for the fifth time this season for protesting Bentley's red card but his ban will not kick in until Saturday's clash with Chester.

Notts County news

Notts County manager Ian McParland is short of defenders for the game at Priestfield. Adam Tann is the latest defender to be sidelined through injury after a scan on Monday revealed he suffered medial ligament damage in the 1-1 draw against Macclesfield and he will be out for two months. Michael Johnson missed the Macclesfield game with bruised toes and remains out. He could be fit for the local derby against Chesterfield at Saltergate on Saturday. Stephen Hunt is still struggling with a groin problem while on-loan defender Jason Beardsley continues to nurse a thigh injury. Captain Mike Edwards, Jamie Clapham and Paul Mayo are the only recognised defenders available to McParland.
