Midfielder joins on an initial month's loan after training with the Blues

Nigel Quashie made his debut for Birmingham against Crystal Palace on Tuesday after joining the Blues on an initial month's loan from West Ham. The midfielder has been training with Alex McLeish's side for the last month as he sought to regain fitness after missing last season with a long-term foot injury. McLeish threw him into the action in the 1-0 victory over the Eagles, which sent the Blues back to the top of the Championship, with the 30-year-old coming on as an 73rd minute substitute. Speaking before the game, McLeish said the player would boost his resources at St Andrews.

Looked good

He told the club's official website: "Quashie has looked good and he's definitely a player who will enhance our squad. "He's got a good attitude and a winning attitude. "You can flippantly throw that term around, but I think he's got that type of steel we require for the ambitions that we have." The Blues boss added: "He was out for so long that we just needed to determine whether he can get through games week in and week out without picking up niggly little injuries.
Not easy
"It's not easy to establish that before you sign somebody. "I would think the fitness side of things has improved over the past few weeks."
