Veteran midfielder signs on

Injury-plagued Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Bernd Schneider has been handed a one-year contract extension. The 35-year-old veteran has yet to play for Leverkusen this season after undergoing an operation for a slipped disc earlier this year. But the club still feel he has a role to play despite his problems. "It is the most normal thing in the world to show such a long-serving player that we are backing him," Bayer coach Bruno Labbadia told the club's official website. "This isn't just a gesture, but we are absolutely sure that he will return and continue to help us." Schneider joined Leverkusen from Eintracht Frankfurt in 1999 and has made 262 Bundesliga appearances fort he club.
