Toni ruled out against old club

Bayern Munich striker Luca Toni misses out on a trip to his former club Fiorentina in the UEFA Champions League. The Italy international is sidelined with sore ribs and his absence will likely see Lukas Podolski start alongside Miroslav Klose. Philipp Lahm is out with an ankle injury, while Bayern are also missing long-term absentees Hamit Altintop and Willy Sagnol. Victory for Bayern could secure qualification to the last 16, if French champions Lyon also avoid defeat at home to Steaua Bucharest. With Fiorentina desperate for the points as well, Bayern coach Jurgen Klinsmann is confident the game will suit his team.

Open game

"Fiorentina have to win and, for us, the situation is completely different from what we've faced in our last three Bundesliga matches where teams have mainly tried to defend," said Klinsmann. "Our character is to go forward and look for goals, and Fiorentina have to do the same. It's probably going to be a very open, attacking game." Fiorentina have collected just two points from three games so far and defeat would leave them with an uphill battle to reach the knockout phase. Alberto Gilardino returns from a domestic suspension and he is set to partner Adrian Mutu in attack after the Romanian shook off a knee injury. Viola coach Cesare Prandelli said: "In the away game, Bayern showed us they are an international side. But Wednesday will be a very different game. "We owe it to ourselves and to our fans to put on a big performance and I'm confident we'll do that. "We've got to go into it properly. Without fear or second thoughts, but with all the enthusiasm of a team who want to get better. We've got nothing to lose."
