United and Arsenal frustrated, while Juventus progress to the last 16

Manchester United were forced to wait for their place in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League as they left it late to earn a point at Celtic, while Arsenal were frustrated by Fenerbahce in North London. Gordon Strachan's side recorded a memorable 1-0 victory over United in the group stages in 2006 and it was almost the same story this year as Scott McDonald netted an opener. Ahead of kick-off, Celtic had won eight of their 13 Champions League games in Glasgow and a buoyant home crowd reflected that statistic, but United dominated the encounter at Parkhead. Holders United - who would have advanced to the last 16 with three points - enjoyed plenty of possession and put their hosts under immense pressure, but were grateful to a late Ryan Giggs equaliser to stay level with Villarreal at the top of Group E. Meanwhile, an injury-hit Arsenal remain at the peak of Group G, but they could not find a way past Fenerbahce in a frustrating stalemate at Emirates Stadium. The Gunners went into the encounter in the knowledge that three points coupled with a Dynamo Kiev victory over Porto would secure a place in the latter stages, but neither result materialised. Elsewhere, Alessandro Del Piero was the hero of the piece as the Italian veteran scored the goals which ensured Juventus were the only team to progress to the last 16 with a victory at nine-time winners Real Madrid in Group H. But United's draw with Celtic was the story of the night as the two British sides could not be separated in a gripping encounter in Scotland, which keeps the hosts' faint chances of progressing alive. Defending champions United - who started with Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov on the bench - were quickly into their stride, but Celtic survived the storm. And Strachan's side then found themselves in front on 13 minutes as United half-cleared a Paul Hartley free-kick before Gary Caldwell headed back into the danger area for McDonald to sumptuously lob Ben Foster with the outside of his right foot. The goal was the first United had conceded in this season's competition and it visibly angered Sir Alex Ferguson's men as they dominated in the wake of McDonald's world-class opener, but an equaliser was not forthcoming in the first 45 minutes. Ferguson introduced Berbatov for Nani at the interval and the change only served to increase the pressure on Celtic as the Bulgarian had an effort cleared off the line by Shaun Maloney. Celtic were beginning to sense victory, but United demonstrated their never-say-die attitude as, with six minutes to play, the Red Devils equalised when Giggs nodded in after Artur Boruc spilled a Cristiano Ronaldo shot from range. Arsenal could not find a way past Fenerbahce at Emirates Stadium as Arsene Wenger's side were forced to settle for a 0-0 draw. The Gunners - looking to recover from a Premier League upset at Stoke on Saturday - were at their free-flowing best from kick-off, with Aaron Ramsey proving effective on his first European start. And midway through the first half Wenger's men were almost rewarded for their aesthetic football as Fenerbahce goalkeeper Volkan Demirel tipped a close-range Robin van Persie effort on to the cross bar. Arsenal rolled Fenerbahce aside 5-2 in Istanbul two weeks ago, and former Spain manager Luis Aragones clearly learned a lesson, with his side set up to nullify their North London hosts. Indeed, Fenerbahce were the dominant force at the start of the second half and Wenger responded by bringing on Mexican wonder kid Carlos Vela for a disgruntled Nicklas Bendtner. The change, though, did not create a goal and Arsenal now find themselves only two points clear of Porto at the summit of the group. Juventus booked their place in the knockout rounds as they defeated Real 2-0 at the Bernabeu in front of new Argentina coach Diego Maradona. The home side dominated the opening exchanges, but Juventus stunned their hosts in the 17th minute as striker Del Piero - who scored an excellent goal in the reverse fixture a fortnight ago - struck from 20 yards. Del Piero then continued his impressive season in Europe as he took advantage of a poorly positioned Real wall to convert a trademark free-kick on 67 minutes, netting his fourth goal in four Champions League games. Bayern Munich missed out on the chance to progress from Group F as they drew 1-1 with Fiorentina in Italy. Ahead of kick-off, Fiorentina had not won a Champions League game in six attempts, but they sensationally took the lead after only 10 minutes as Adrian Mutu showed all of his class to volley in a Luciano Zauri cross. However, in-form Bayern, who had won their last five games in all competitions, were level with 12 minutes remaining as Tim Borowski netted from 10 yards. Villarreal stay level with United at the top of Group E after a 2-2 home draw with AaB Aalborg. The Primera Liga outfit were in front four minutes before the half-time whistle as French midfielder Robert Pires carried the ball towards Aalborg's goal before feeding former United forward Giuseppe Rossi, who hit past Diego Lopez with the aid of a deflection. But Danish side Aalborg - who parted company with former manager Bruce Rioch after the last round of fixtures - were level nine minutes after half-time as Jeppe Curth struck his first Champions League goal after latching onto a Caca back-heel. Parity, though, was short-lived as Villarreal regained the lead 15 minutes from time when Guillermo Franco slotted his side back in front from close range. However, Aalborg claimed a point with nine minutes left on the clock as Anders Due curled a brilliant left-footed free-kick past Lopez. Lyon brushed aside Steaua Bucharest 2-0 to move ahead of Bayern on goal difference at the top of Group F. Steaua will be disappointed with the manner in which they allowed their hosts to take the lead as dead ball-specialist Juninho - who has hinted that he may retire at the end of the season - was not forced to stretch his ability with a tame free-kick in the 44th minute. Dubious goalkeeping from Steaua shot-stopper Robinson Zapata allowed Ligue 1 leaders Lyon to take the lead, but he was helpless to prevent Anthony Reveillere doubling the advantage in the final minute. Porto required injury time to come from behind to upset Dynamo Kiev and increase the pressure on Arsenal with a 2-1 victory. Kiev were in front on 21 minutes as Artem Milevskiy stroked a controlled finish past Porto goalkeeper Helton from the edge of the area after being set up by Tiberiu Ghioane. Porto equalised after half-time as Jorge Rolando headed past Stanislav Bogush, and the Portuguese side sneaked the points as Lucho Gonzalez netted in injury time, before he received a second booking for his celebrations. Zenit record their first victory in this season's Champions League as they defeated BATE Borisov 2-0 in Group H. The visitors took a deserved lead over their Belarusian hosts 11 minutes before the interval as Russia striker Pavel Pogrebnyak converted with time and space when collecting a Konstantin Zyryanov pass. Zenit were forced to hang on for the closing stages as Sebastien Puygrenier received his second booking of the night on 73 minutes, but Danny netted late on to secure the victory.
