Gunner wreck the mic

Rapping, a marriage proposal and the funky chicken dance - just another run of the mill weekend on FanZone.

Curtis 'Double C' Corbin introduces the Gunner rap!

Hip-hop style rapping, a marriage proposal and the funky chicken dance - just another run of the mill weekend on FanZone. It all began Saturday lunchtime as Manchester United headed to the Emirates, with Arsenal desperate to prove they were still serious contenders for the title. Thankfully for Gunners fan Curtis Corbin - making his first FanZone appearance of the season - Arsene Wenger's team were on song against the Premier League champions. And maybe Curtis helped Arsenal on their way to the 2-1 win after he waxed lyrical to his United adversary Darren Briggs (nicknamed Sprinkler) with this little ditty before kick-off: Welcome to the Emirates, top of the range;
Obama's proved that it's time for change.
Sitting here, I'm feeling tense,
If Wenger doesn't sort out that shoddy defence.
They flew in the 'Sprinkler' to take me on;
This is a rap, it ain't a song.
Win or lose, Gunner 'til I die,
If they score six I'll be out at half-time!
Luckily for wannabe rap star 'Double C' (and the FanZone producer) there was no need for the Arsenal fan to vacate at the break, with Samir Nasri's deflected effort putting the Gunners on their way to victory. The French midfielder gave the home side a two-goal lead just two minutes into the restart and Curtis was up impersonating Emanuel Adebayor's celebratory dance, even though the injured striker wasn't even on the pitch. But as comfortable as they looked, Gunners fans know that a two-goal advantage doesn't mean you're home and dry - and history looked to be repeating itself. It's not often that a change at right-back can turn a game, but Sir Alex Ferguson's decision to replace Gary Neville with Rafael Da Silva was a masterstroke after he pulled one back in the final minute of normal time to set up a thrilling finale. Could Arsenal hold on, or would they crumble again at home like they did to Spurs? Red Devil Darren was convinced the fourth official's board would display 10 minutes, but it was only six much to his frustration. But still he kept the faith. A tense period of extra-time ensued, with both our FanZoners on the edge of their seats, as United threw everything they had at the Gunners rearguard. But Arsenal managed to hold firm and wrapped (geddit?) up the points. In amongst all the excitement on the pitch - and in the booth - there was even time for a marriage proposal, followed by an acceptance, via the FanZone text number and ticker. Who says romance is dead?
Torrential
Super Sunday kicked off with torrential downpours at Ewood Park - but the sodden conditions did nothing to dampen the spirits of our FanZone commentators. Chelsea fan Javier Mitchell was a late substitution after Nicholas Padayache withdrew due to illness (get well soon mate) but that only added to the excitement for the Blues boy who was convinced his side would get the points they needed to stay top of the table. Blackburn supporter Lee Godley (pictured) had other ideas, but Nicolas Anelka soon rained on his parade when he gave the visitors the lead in the 40th minute - not that the striker knew a great deal about it and was seemingly trying to get out of the way of Jose Bosingwa's shot before turning into the Rovers net. A jubilated Javier then started encouraging Liverpool fans to text in their views on the title race. Unsurprisingly, they weren't too complementary about his beloved Chelsea... But when Anelka doubled the Londoner's lead in the second half, Luiz Felipe Scolari's men looked home and dry. The topic of conversation then turned to what the Blues boss would like for his 60th birthday, which he was celebrating on the day of the match. Suggestions on the text included 'a defender who can stay on his feet,' 'a teddy bear because he looks like he needs a hug' and 'a team of talented players.' I can't quite recall the club supported by the texter of that last idea, but the fact it was signed Scouse Barry gives you an idea...
Pulsating
The curtain came down on another pulsating weekend of FanZone action with Newcastle's trip to Fulham. With both sides needing the points, it was bound to be a tight affair and so it proved. Matt Bright, who was compared to Andy Gray by one viewer (we're assuming they meant the esteemed Sky Sports pundit rather that the Charlton Athletic striker), was on the mic for the Cottagers, who took the lead through Andy Johnson (pictured). And Matt celebrated by mocking the infamous Robbie Elliot funky chicken celebration of yore. Magpies fan Malcolm Bamford got to have his own go at demonstrating the former Geordie player's bizarre goal celebration when Shola Ameobi put the visitors on level terms. This prompted a dance-off between the two commentators to see who could flap and wiggle in the style of poultry the best. Well, there were no winners in that contest, least of all the FanZone viewers! As the game looked to be heading for a draw, Newcastle's Fabricio Coloccini brought down AJ in the box and the ref pointed at the spot. Danny Murphy stepped up and slotted the ball home to send Matt home happy and Malcolm with his tail feathers between his legs. What a weekend!
