Striker to join permanently, McEveley goes out on loan

Derby have signed Charlton striker Luke Varney, while Jay McEveley has gone in the opposite direction. As revealed by skysports.com earlier this week, Charlton had lined up a loan deal for McEveley and were prepared to offer Varney as a sweetener in any move. Varney has initially joined on loan with the move set to become permanent when the transfer window reopens in January. Rams boss Paul Jewell is a big admirer of Varney and believes he will prove to be a valuable addition to his squad. "Luke is a player who I have admired for some time and whose progress I have been monitoring," Jewell told the club's official website. "He has great pace and ability and I am delighted to bring him to Derby County." Scottish defender McEveley, who has only recently returned from a loan spell from Preston, has agreed a three-month loan deal at The Valley. Charlton caretaker boss Phil Parkinson was delighted to bring in McEveley as he looks to solve the problematic left-back spot. "I'm also delighted to bring Jay in. Despite his young age, he has got a lot of experience, both in the Premier League and the Championship. "He's a big, strong, athletic full-back, who will give us much-needed consistency in that area."
