Saints chairman unhappy at administration rumours

Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe was in bullish mood when asked about the club's current financial situation. Rumours were rife that the South Coast club were heading for administration but the Saints chairman was unwilling to admit or deny such claims. Lowe did say that the club would not be forced to sell their best assets in the January transfer window, news which will calm many Southampton supporters as they look to fight against relegation. Lowe is in his second tenure as chairman of the club and they currently sit 19th in the Championship just four points off the relegation zone.

Statement

He told Sky Sports News: "The situation is how I stated in my financial report. That is a public document. "People can actually read that and they can read our accounts so you don't need me to comment on that, that's a matter of fact. "I have actually commented on it in my chairman's statements so the best thing to do is to read that." Lowe went on to declare that rumours that the club are about to enter administration could have come from rival clubs and believes it shows the Saints are heading in the right direction. He said: "I always think that when we start getting these stories about Southampton which probably come from chairman who want to buy our players. "It could be agents who want to undermine us or other people in the Championship who think we're perhaps threatening them. "We haven't seen this for a long time it's now beginning to happen. I think it's a sign that we're doing things right rather than doing things wrong.
Positive
"I would urge all of our supporters just come and watch the football we are playing - that is ultimately the yardstick to which we want to be judged. "That is basically the product that will take us into the Premier League and resolve any financial problems we may or may not have at the moment." Southampton manager Jan Poortvliet has had to work on a shoestring budget mainly fielding youngsters from the club's respected youth system. After a slow start to the season the Dutch coach and his youngsters have attracted attention for their flowing football and recent good form. Lowe denies that the club will have to sell in order to stay afloat and has insisted that the club will be making decisions judged on what is best for them come January. "We will do what is right for the club, for the shareholders and for the players. "We run this club and we will do what's right for the long-term benefit of our supporters, our shareholders and our players."
