Intriguing battles at the top and bottom on a busy weekend of action

League leaders Wolves entertain Barnsley this weekend, while Birmingham travel to Preston in a game which can be seen live on Sky Sports 1. Reading will hope their fine form continues at home to Norwich and Crystal Palace have the opportunity to keep their recent resurgence going against lowly Doncaster. It is Wolves, though, that currently lead the second tier title race and Mick McCarthy's men will be confident of at least maintaining their three-point cushion at the summit when they play host to a Barnsley side low on confidence. Birmingham will be hoping to close that gap when they put their seven-game unbeaten run on the line at fellow promotion-chasers Preston. Reading remain in the hunt for a top-two finish after winning their last three fixtures, and will expect to have too much for Norwich at the Madejski Stadium. Burnley have suffered only two defeats in 12 outings and will fancy their chances on Saturday when struggling Southampton roll into town. Sheffield United have gone off the boil of late and will be looking to make amends when they head to draw specialists Swansea. Cardiff have also faltered in recent weeks, securing only one win from four, and will be wary of allowing weekend opponents Ipswich an opportunity to close on the play-off places. Crystal Palace sit on the fringes of the top six after winning four of their last five and Neil Warnock will have his charges fired up for a contest with a rejuvenated Doncaster. Plymouth have lost their last three to slip down the rankings and will have hoped for an easier assignment than a home clash with Queens Park Rangers. Sheffield Wednesday have taken 10 points from their last four fixtures and will be hoping to pile more misery on a Bristol City side that is without a win in six. Watford have found some stability after an early season wobble but, with the relegation zone still too close for comfort, Brendan Rodgers will know that three points from a home encounter with Coventry are essential. The final game on a busy afternoon of action sees struggling Nottingham Forest, one win in eight, take on out-of-sorts Blackpool, five defeats in seven, at the City Ground.
