United defender hopes to build on 2008 trophy haul

Rio Ferdinand admits 2008 has been a special year for Manchester United, but is hoping the success continues. On Sunday, the England international defender helped the Red Devils add the Club World Cup to their Premier League and UEFA Champions League crowns. A 1-0 victory over LDU Quito in Japan ensured United can now lay claim to the title of 'best team on the planet'. However, while Ferdinand and co are happy to bask in former glories for now, the Old Trafford outfit will not rest on their laurels as they look to ensure that the next 12 months are as productive as the last.

Honour

"Without doubt, this is my greatest year as a footballer," said Ferdinand. "It is also one of the best years in the club's history. "When you look back, probably only the Treble year could better it. "It's great to be part of a side that has lifted the Premier League, the Champions League and the Club World Cup all in one year. You couldn't really ask for much more than that. "But this isn't the finish. This is just the start. We want to achieve more, so we need to try to build on this."
Ambition
Ferdinand led United out against Quito at the weekend, strengthening his claim to be installed as the club's new captain once Gary Neville decides to hang up his boots. The 30-year-old is certainly up for the challenge, insisting the Club World Cup is just another stepping stone in his quest for iconic status at the Theatre of Dreams. "There is a long way to go before I finish the business I started as a footballer," he said. "You go out to try to ingrain your name in the club's history. This trophy is a step towards doing that. "But you can't just stop there. You have to keep striving for the next thing, and the one after that."
