United striker has no issue with his temperament

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney does not believe there is a problem with his temperament, insisting he always feels in control. Rooney's temperament has regularly been questioned during his career and he was again in the headlines on Boxing Day after appearing to swing an arm at Stoke City defender Abdoulaye Faye. There have been suggestions that to curb Rooney's natural style would detract from his overall contribution to the United and England cause. But the 23-year-old feels that claims he has an issue with controlling his behaviour on the pitch are wide of the mark. The forward is confident he is always able to keep his temper in check and is not concerned about people who criticise his conduct.

Keep calm

"I don't think there is a problem with my temperament," Rooney told the Sunday Mirror. "I don't accept that I need to learn to count to 10 in certain situations because I always feel in control of myself. "I do get stuck in during matches, but I like to think that I keep calm both on the pitch and off it. "It's people who don't know me who like to have a go at me. But I don't give them a moment's thought because they're just not important to me. "I wouldn't like to let my family or my friends down and as long as they're proud of me that's all that matters. "People who know me will tell you that I am a quiet and shy person at heart."
