Defender set to leave after going on the transfer list

Izzy Iriekpen feels he will not be able to leave Scunthorpe United on good terms after asking to go on the transfer list. The defender is out of contract at the end of the season and recently met Iron manager Nigel Adkins to discuss his future at Glanford Park. The talks resulted in Iriekpen losing the captaincy to Cliff Byrne and confirmation he would be made available for transfer in January. However, the 26-year-old believes Scunthorpe released a misleading statement regarding the situation and is disappointed with how the matter has been handled.

Valuable friendships

"For the past two weeks my agent and I have been in discussions with Scunthorpe United over my future with the club," Iriekpen told Sky Sports in a statement. "Specifically, manager Nigel Adkins asked my agent if I would consider a new contract this summer. I informed the club that I wanted to be put on the transfer list. "Adkins agreed and it was my understanding, and intention, that we part on good terms. But Scunthorpe United has made that impossible by releasing a misleading press statement. "Scunthorpe United never led us to believe a new contract was not forthcoming. Further, Adkins never expressed dissatisfaction with my performance or leadership. In fact, last week, Adkins reiterated I was chosen to lead the club "for a reason" and that I was respected in the locker room. "I have made valuable friendships with the players at Scunthorpe United and wish newly-appointed captain, Cliff Byrne, the best of luck along with the rest of my team-mates. "I am disappointed that my departure was not handled with the professionalism I expected, but am leaving with the confidence that I have made substantial contributions to the club and have a bright future ahead."
