Kinnear to face competition in bid to land Gers skipper

Newcastle could face competition from several Premier League rivals for Rangers' Barry Ferguson, skysports.com understands. Magpies boss Joe Kinnear revealed earlier this week he had made an enquiry for Ferguson as he looks to bolster his squad. Kinnear is hoping to tempt Gers chief Walter Smith to part with his captain with a sizeable offer, as Rangers look to balance the books at Ibrox. News of Newcastle's interest in Ferguson has alerted several other Premier League sides to the midfielder's possible availability, with interested clubs keeping tabs on his situation at Rangers. Ferguson, who has recently returned from an ankle injury, has 18 months to run on his current contract but as yet no talks have taken place over a new deal. The 30-year-old could realistically run down his contract and agree a pre-contract with interested clubs next January and Rangers would be keen to avoid such a scenario. Rangers would be loath to lose their prize asset, but a big-money offer in this month's transfer window could prove too good an opportunity to turn down - with Ferguson soon turning 31.
