Espanyol need away goals to overcome minnows

Espanyol survived a scare to squeeze past Poli Ejido and into the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey as Barcelona sauntered past Atletico Madrid. Lower league side Poli Ejido took a 3-2 lead into the second leg of the tie, but a Sanz own goal after seven minutes earned Espanyol a 1-0 win and progression on away goals. Barcelona took a 3-1 lead into their second leg against Atletico, and fell behind to Florent Sinama-Pongolle's 24th minute goal. However, Bojan Krkic drew Barca level five minutes later and Eidur Gudjohnsen clinched a 2-1 win on 76 minutes. Valencia required extra-time to make it through after a 3-1 victory at home to Racing Santander. The first leg finished 1-1 and that was the score after 90 minutes as Vicente's 18th minute penalty was cancelled out by Racing's Colsa three minutes later. Vicente put Valencia back in front on 102 minutes and Joaquin made the game safe in the second period of extra-time. Sevilla were in explosive form on their travels after a 3-0 win at Deportivo La Coruna secured a 5-1 aggregate success. Jesus Navas opened the scoring inside the first minute before Brazilian striker Luis Fabiano netted twice before half-time. Arzu's 20th minute goal clinched a 1-0 win for Real Betis at home to Real Union and a 2-0 triumph on aggregate. An injury-time goal from Jorge allowed Sporting Gijon to sneak into the next round after a 4-3 aggregate win over Real Valladolid. After Gijon won the first leg 3-1, Valladolid responded by taking the lead in the return after 23 minutes through Fabian Canobbio. Pedro Leon's 77th minute goal appeared to be sending Valladolid through on away goals, but Jorge's late effort took Gijon into the last eight. Real Mallorca are another side into the quarter-finals after a 1-1 draw at Almeria secured a 4-2 win on aggregate. Pablo Piatti gave Almeria an early lead in the second leg before Juan Arango replied on 28 minutes for Mallorca.
