Argentina coach says Messi can lead the way
Diego Maradona believes that Lionel Messi has the same leadership qualities he did during his international career.
The Argentine coach, though, says Messi must step up a gear to prove himself at international level as he once did.
The 21-year-old striker is already rated as one of the best players in the world but Maradona believes he can still improve.
Despite his young age, the Argentina coach says Messi can go on and lead his country if he can show the same grit and determination he did as a player.
Expectations
"I gave everything for my country, I even played through injuries," he said.
"I hope to see Leo (Messi) doing this and a lot more besides for the good of Argentina because we have great expectations of what he can do for the national team.
"It cost me a lot to keep playing. It is a unique opportunity because the players need a leader and I want him to be it. I am proud of the squad that I have."
Maradona admitted that the desire to play has been lacking amongst some of his players.
Keen to emphasise the importance of playing at international level, he added: "I want to bring back the old mystique of the shirt, to instil into the players what wearing it really means."
