Keeper has every confidence in his centre-half
Shay Given has thrown his backing behind beleaguered Manchester City team-mate Richard Dunne.
While Given played a key role in Newcastle's relegation battle prior to his transfer window move to City, Dunne has struggled for form this season and is currently out through suspension after his red card against Wigan.
Between them the pair have approaching 140 caps for the Republic of Ireland and Given spoke warmly of his international and now club colleague.
"Dunnie is one of the best centre-halves I have ever played behind," he told the club's
official website.
As manager Mark Hughes looks to Given to shore up the confidence of his creaking back-line, the keeper said of his time in the Irish squad with Dunne: "We go back a few years and know each other well.
"The partnership between the centre-half and the goalkeeper is an important one. Richard and I have played together a lot for Ireland and hopefully we will improve as well."
