Milan defender expected to miss the rest of the season

AC Milan have been dealt a blow with the news that Alessandro Nesta will require surgery on a back injury. The Italy international now looks almost certain to be ruled out of action for the remainder of the season. Nesta has been sidelined since July 2008 and is yet to make an appearance for Carlo Ancelotti's side this term. He had hoped to be back in contention after a two-month break in Miami, where he worked on his rehabilitation with a renowned back specialist. The 32-year-old had even suggested that he would in line to feature for Milan in their derby clash with Inter on Sunday. However, he failed to make that game, which Milan lost 2-1, after suffering a setback in training and is now facing a further spell on the sidelines as he recovers from an imminent operation.
