Watford came close to loan deal for Nigerian midfielder
Norwegian outfit Lyn have revealed that Watford came close to landing Paul Obiefule in January.
The Hornets were keen to take the Nigeria international on loan for the remainder of the season, with the view to completing a permanent deal in the summer.
The 22-year-old midfielder is regarded as one of the Eliteserien's hottest properties and has regularly attracted attention from abroad.
With Norwegian football currently crippled by a financial crisis a switch to England would have been beneficial to all concerned.
However, on 15th January Obiefule was forced to undergo surgery on a knee problem and the Hornets dropped their interest.
Option
"They wanted to take him on loan, with an option in the contract to buy him," Lyn's sporting director Rof Magne told
Nettavisen.
"It could have been a good deal.
"However, from a sporting perspective, it is of course great to keep Paul at Lyn."
Obiefule is now fully focused on doing his best for Lyn in the forthcoming season, which gets under way in April, but has not ruled out the possibility of securing a move to England in the future.
"I am playing for Lyn and I want to give everything to ensure that we have a successful season," he said.
"But I am not excluding anything in the future."
