Former goalkeeper writes off rivals' chances
Oliver Kahn expects his former club Bayern Munich to finish top of the Bundesliga even though they have struggled for consistency all season.
Bayern are currently fourth in the table but they trail leaders Hertha Berlin by just two points with 14 games remaining.
Goalkeeper Kahn, who retired in 2008 after a career spanning more than 20 years, feels Bayern may have lost focus on domestic matters as they chase UEFA Champions League glory.
But he believes Bayern are still the team to beat in the Bundesliga, telling
TZ: "Bayern won the double three times in the last four years and it may be a bit tougher now to get yourself focused all the time instead of just looking at the Champions League.
"They are playing with a lot more verve when they play in Europe this year. But probably the squad is thinking: we are just two points off, we will end up champions!
"It's dangerous not to be fully focused on your task, because the rest are clearly trying their best.
"But which club is really performing with the necessary consistency? Even if Bayern plays at 80 per cent they would have to come out champions."
Exciting
The Bundesliga title race could develop into an exciting finish with five or six teams still clustered together, but Kahn has dismissed the chances of several of the contenders.
"The Bundesliga will be boring if everything is too simple for Bayern," he said.
"Schalke are always failing to make it because of internal problems, Hamburg lacks consistency, Bremen are doing badly and Hertha are a different situation.
"Hoffenheim are no real threat. This should not be seen as if I am not showing respect for Hoffenheim, but this is not a long-term rival for Bayern at this point."
